NDIS Tips
Embarking on your NDIS journey can be a crucial step towards a more fulfilling life, tailored to your unique needs. Whether you're seeking support for yourself or a loved one, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) could be your pathway to independence, effective work or study, and active social engagement.
Are you between the ages of 7 and 65? Great news! The NDIS is here to assist individuals within this age range. If you or your loved one falls into this category, you’re ready for the next step. However, if you’re looking for support for a child under 7, the Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) program can provide invaluable assistance, focusing on their developmental needs.
For those over 65, alternative support options such as My Aged Care may come into play, helping you find the necessary services and facilities.
To be eligible for the NDIS, you must be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or hold a protected special category visa. If you fit into one of these categories, you’re on the right track. But if not, don’t despair; there are other avenues of support available to explore.
Residing in Australia is a must for NDIS eligibility, with a majority of your time spent in the country. While you’re free to travel, occasional inquiries about your travel plans may arise to ensure that Australia remains your primary residence.
For NDIS eligibility, your disability should result from a permanent impairment. This impairment can encompass various areas, such as physical, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or psychosocial. If your condition meets these criteria, and you require disability-specific support for daily tasks, you may well be eligible for NDIS assistance.
If you require assistance now to reduce future support needs or need support for your family to help them support you better in the future, you may qualify for the NDIS. However, if this doesn’t apply to your situation, alternative community and government assistance options are worth exploring with your Partner in the Community.
The NDIS can provide support to alleviate the impact of your impairment but doesn’t cover medical treatments. It’s essential to ensure that there are no available medical treatments for your impairment. Conditions that may not be considered permanent, like obesity, have potential treatment options outside the NDIS scope.
You’re Eligible – What’s Next?
Once you’ve determined your eligibility, it’s time to contact the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) at 1800 800 110. They will guide you through the process and send you an Access Request Form. Be sure to submit this form along with your supporting evidence. You can do this via email, mail, or at your local NDIA office.
Within 21 days, the NDIS will evaluate your eligibility and inform you of their decision. If you’re approved, you’ll receive a letter and proceed to a planning meeting to explore available local support and funds.
Getting the Most from Your NDIS Plan
Consider partnering with a Local Area Coordination partner, plan manager, or support coordinator after NDIS approval. Their expertise can maximize the benefits of your NDIS plan. For additional information, visit the NDIS website for funding and service details.
If NDIS eligibility remains out of reach, there are still avenues for government support. Discover more about available assistance options for those who don’t meet NDIS disability requirements.
