NDIS News: Putting participants back at the centre of the NDIS

At Abled Care and Nursing Services, we welcome the Australian Government’s renewed commitment to making the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) fairer, simpler, and more person-focused. These updates, backed by significant funding, aim to prioritize participant needs, streamline processes, and pave the way for better support for children under 9 years old with disabilities.

Key Improvements to the NDIS

The Government is introducing critical reforms that include:

Government-Funded Support Needs Assessments

Families will no longer bear the financial burden of paying for support needs assessments. A new, dedicated multi-disciplinary workforce will work directly with participants to understand their individual needs and ensure the right tools are in place.

Early Intervention Pathway for Children

A $4.5 million initiative will focus on designing an early intervention pathway for children under 9 with developmental delays or disabilities. This step ensures children receive the right support from the start, helping them thrive.

Investments in Planning and Quality Support

A total of $1 billion in funding through the 2024–25 Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) will improve the participant experience and sustain the NDIS for future generations.

A Sustainable and Person-Centered NDIS

A significant portion of this funding—$280 million—will help the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) adopt a person-centered and consistent approach to planning NDIS budgets. This aligns with recommendations from the independent NDIS Review and underscores the Government’s focus on participant empowerment.

At Abled Care and Nursing Services, we believe this shift will enable participants to access the support they deserve while reducing waiting times for allied health professionals across Australia.

Enhancing the NDIS Experience

The MYEFO package also includes:

$503.5 million to support current participants and ensure timely decision-making.

$143.9 million for the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission to enhance service quality and safety.

$110.4 million to improve fraud detection through advanced IT systems.

These measures aim to restore the NDIS to its original intent: a scheme that genuinely supports individuals with disabilities and their families.

Supporting Children with Disabilities

The early intervention pathway will address a critical gap in the NDIS by providing targeted support for children at a crucial stage in their development. This initiative reflects the Government’s commitment to safeguarding the future of Australia’s young participants.
