NDIS News: NDIS growth target on track to be delivered

Recent updates from the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) highlight the positive trajectory of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) thanks to Government reforms aimed at improving participant outcomes and ensuring financial sustainability. This progress signals a promising future for the more than 680,000 Australians relying on the NDIS.

Progress in Financial Sustainability

The NDIA’s 2023-24 Annual Financial Sustainability Report (AFSR) shows that the Scheme is on track to meet its targeted annual growth rate of 8% by July 2026. This marks a significant reduction from the 23% annual growth rate seen in the past.

The AFSR’s projections reveal that:

Growth will decrease to 12% in 2024-25 and to 8.4% in 2025-26 before achieving the 8% target by 2026-27.

Projected Scheme expenses for the next four years are $210.3 billion, $2.3 billion lower than previous predictions.

Recent reforms are expected to stabilise growth, saving $19 billion over the next four years.

These adjustments reflect a stronger, more participant-focused NDIS that prioritizes better outcomes while ensuring long-term sustainability.

Enhanced Participant Support

The Government’s reforms have led to meaningful improvements for NDIS participants. Changes include clearer guidelines on funding usage, consistent planning decisions, and proactive support for those at risk of exhausting their plans. Key initiatives like the Crack Down on Fraud program also reinforce the integrity of the Scheme.

The results speak for themselves:

Plan inflation has stabilized, with levels remaining lower than since September 2022.

Fewer participants are at risk of overspending their plans.

Scheme expenses for the past year were approximately $600 million less than estimated in the 2024-25 Budget.

These adjustments reflect a stronger, more participant-focused NDIS that prioritizes better outcomes while ensuring long-term sustainability.

A Better NDIS for Today and Tomorrow

Minister for the NDIS and Government Services, the Hon. Bill Shorten MP, emphasized the importance of these reforms:

“These results show that the NDIS is on a stronger path. We’re making sure every dollar goes towards participant outcomes, creating a fairer and more sustainable Scheme that’s here for generations to come.”
