NDIS News: $40 million boost for peer support and capacity building
The Australian Government has announced a significant $39.8 million funding boost over two years to enhance peer support and capacity-building initiatives for people with disabilities. This funding will benefit 69 disability organizations across the nation, empowering them to deliver essential community-based programs.
Recognizing the Power of Peer Support
In June 2024, the Peer Support and Capacity Building grant round was introduced, acknowledging the critical role that peer support and capacity-building programs play in fostering independence and inclusion for people with disabilities. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has now confirmed the successful recipients of this grant.
The Hon. Bill Shorten, Minister for the NDIS, emphasized the importance of these programs:
“Feedback from the NDIS Review highlights how vital it is for people with disabilities to connect with peers who share similar experiences. Peer support and self-advocacy organizations are essential for empowering individuals to develop skills, make decisions, and build confidence.”
Abled Care and Nursing Services is proud to align with the NDIS’s commitment to empowering participants. Our team is dedicated to delivering high-quality, personalized care that makes daily life easier for individuals and their families.
Supporting Local and Community-Based Initiatives
This funding is targeted at smaller, community-based organizations, enabling them to continue their invaluable work supporting people with disabilities, families, and carers. Through a mix of local, state, and national programs—both in-person and online—these organizations will:
Deliver peer-led self-advocacy programs.
Foster stronger community connections.
Support individuals to live more independently.
This funding ensures that people with disabilities can shape their own futures, connect with lifelong learning opportunities, and actively participate in their communities.
Strengthening Peer-Led Advocacy
The grants will enable organizations to provide tailored programs that meet diverse needs, helping people with disabilities access vital resources and tools for self-advocacy and skill-building. The initiative builds on the Department of Social Services’ Information, Linkages, and Capacity Building (ILC) grants program.
