Ken Brown: The Innovator Who Made Surf Swimming Safer

At Abled Care and Nursing Services, we value stories of resilience, innovation, and community impact. One such story is that of Ken Brown, a trailblazer whose work in developing Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRBs) has saved over 200,000 lives on Australia’s beaches and beyond.

Ken, now 91 and a proud resident of Killarney Heights, played a pivotal role in designing and distributing IRBs globally.

The Birth of the Inflatable Rescue Boat

In the early 1970s, Ken sourced French-made Zodiaks, modifying them to withstand Australia’s rugged surf conditions. The result was a durable, inflatable rescue boat that revolutionized surf lifesaving, replacing outdated line-and-reel systems and rowboats.

Ken famously remarked:

You can’t bloody sink an inflatable boat.

A Lifesaving Vision Born from Tragedy

The need for IRBs became clear in 1969 when Warren Mitchell, a young lifesaver, witnessed a tragic drowning incident in the UK. Inspired, he rescued eight people from a rip at Avalon Beach using a basic Dunlop inflatable boat. Recognizing its potential, Ken refined the design alongside Harry Brown of North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club.

Key innovations included:

  • UV-resistant materials sourced from Japan.
  • Pressure release valves to protect against extreme heat.
  • Expanded petrol tank capacity to enhance rescue capabilities.

A Lasting Legacy

Ken’s dedication to surf safety earned him recognition from Surf Lifesaving NSW and an Australian Design Award in 1987 for his IRB innovations. Over three decades, Ken’s company, KBM, manufactured these iconic red boats, even adapting designs for the Australian Navy.
